Architects for New Build Houses and Retrofit Projects in London, Devon and the South West

Design Approach and Context

We eschew a house style, instead spending the early stages of each project analysing and interrogating the brief and context. Working closely with clients and stakeholders, we develop designs that are highly responsive to place, with careful consideration of materiality, sustainability, construction technique, use and function.

New Build and Retrofit Projects

We have expertise across a range of sectors including residential new build houses, extensions and refurbishments, as well as schools, civic buildings and workspace. Projects range from urban infill houses to rural dwellings within sensitive landscapes, alongside the transformation of existing buildings.

An Established, Research-Led Practice

Our RIBA Chartered practice was established in 2014 and is led by Tom Surman and Percy Weston. Alongside practice, we contribute to architectural discourse, regularly teaching and lecturing at institutions including the University of Cambridge, the University of Nottingham and the Royal Institute of British Architects. Tom Surman is also a member of the Camden Design Review Panel.

Awards and Recognition

The work of the practice has been recognised through a number of notable awards. In 2024, Surman Weston was named Architects’ Journal Architect of the Year, with further recognition including the Manser Medal – AJ House of the Year, the RIBA Stephen Lawrence Prize, and RIBA National and Civic Trust Awards.
