The project comprises the complete reconfiguration and refurbishment of 16 former bedsit units within an inner-city tower block. The scheme uses high-quality, flexible materials and simple, intelligent spatial strategies to create compact yet dignified and comfortable homes.
The project forms part of Hackney Council’s wider regeneration initiative to deliver social and affordable housing across the borough.
The scheme was redesigned during the development process in response to budgetary constraints, requiring a pragmatic yet inventive approach. Despite these challenges, the project was completed to a high specification in line with the Hackney New Build Design Specification. The result is a robust and carefully detailed scheme that delivers much-needed affordable homes, contributing meaningfully to the borough’s social housing provision.
Surman Weston procured this project by winning an invited competition held by the London Borough of Hackney.
