Retrofit of school building for new educational kitchen

This project at Brunswick Park Primary School converted the school’s former caretaker’s cottage into a specialist cookery classroom.

Working within a tight budget, the scheme maximises the small cottage’s space, whilst keeping costly structural changes to a minimum. After observing students and teachers during lessons, the spaces were planned to make supervising the young cohort easier and safer during the potentially hazardous cookery lessons. The design was executed around the principle of learning through experience – structural interventions and services are colour-coded and left exposed – encouraging engagement and understanding from the pupils.
